Online dating tip 1: Great photos
One of the most important, if not the most important aspect of your online profile, is your photo album and main profile photo. Most often site members just scan photos looking for someone who catches their eye. And if you’re barely recognisable in your main photo, or look like Worzel Gummidge, then you’re loosing visitors to your profile, and potentially throwing away dates too.
If you’re taking a portrait photo, then try positioning the camera a little above eye level, this will help to avoid any nasty double chins. A little smile will go a long way, but try to avoid looking like a clown. Avoid photos of you with your friends, unless it’s perfectly clear which person in the photo is you. Try to keep photos recent too, at most no older than 5 years.
Adding photos where you are doing things that you enjoy will provide people with a glimpse into your life, and how you like to spend your free time.
Online dating tip 2: Don’t take it personally
Online dating is no different to approaching people in your local pub and asking them out on a date. There will most definitely be rejections. Don’t expect everyone to answer your mails, even if you’ve spent hours writing it. Although rejection can be disappointing, it’s most definitely not the end of the world. Keep on sending those mails, and you’ll soon find that there are many people out there who are genuinely interested in you.
When I first started with online dating, I sent over 20 mails without receiving a single positive reply. It made me sad, I wondered what it was that made me so unappealing. Then I gave myself a slap round the face, injected a little more positivity into my mind, and sent off a few more mails. Eventually the positive replies started to arrive. So whatever you do, don’t feel bad and never give up!
Online dating tip 3: Keep it casual
If you are contacting someone for the first-time, be sure to send a mail and not a wink. Winks, flirts and ice-breakers are for lazy people who can’t be bothered to compose a proper email. Also ensure you read their profile carefully, and don’t ask any questions which they have already answered in their profile.
And please avoid talking about the weather, or any other boring topics. Simply introduce yourself briefly, maybe mentioning why you’ve decided to contact them, (not because of their amazing body!). Perhaps because they like similar sports to yourself, or you might have the same taste in music. Most importantly keep your first mail brief but intriguing. You certainly don’t want to tell them your life story straight of the bat.
Online dating tip 4: Avoid generic mails
It’s very temping when you first start online dating to write one single mail which you then send to everyone on the site. Let me save you the trouble now, this definitely does not work! The majority of people who receive these mails will know immediately that you have never even looked at their profile, and your generic mail will be thrown into the trash where it belongs.
Besides, if you don’t make the effort to read people profiles, you will have no idea if the person you are sending your mail to is a good match or not. They could be a complete psycho for all you know, or even into cross dressing. It’s definitely worth spending a few minutes to find this out.
If you read someone’s profile you will very quickly be able to build an impression about who they are, the type of person they are looking for, and if you could possibly be that person. If you feel like you are a good match, then write them a personalized mail using information from their profile as a guide. But as mentioned in tip 3, don’t go overboard!
Online dating tip 5: Honesty is the best policy
Although it’s a lot easier to lie online, these lies will eventually be exposed and you will find yourself back where you began. Nobody likes a liar, so do yourself a favour and ensure that everything you have written about yourself is 100% truthful, and that your profile photo is really you, and not the first photo that came up in Google when you searched for “sexy underwear model”.
Be clear what you are looking for from a partner. If you are simply looking for sex, then it’s better just to say so, and not to put down that you are looking for a long-term relationship.
And if you are just looking for some no-strings fun, then a casual dating site like Benaughty.com would be the ideal place for you to start looking. Whereas if you are looking for long-term commitment, match.com would be a better choice. But of course, these are not the only dating sites in the UK. You can find all our UK dating site reviews here.
